World Snooker Championship has been postponed

The World Snooker Championship traditionally held every year in Sheffield (UK) in late April and early May was postponed because of coronavirus pandemic. All major theaters have been closed indefinitely after the UK government recommended limiting social contact due to the escalating health crisis.

The 44-th World Championship in “Crucible” which was supposed to start on April 18 and ended on May 4 will take place in July or August and new specific dates will be announced additionally by the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association.

The cancellation seemed inevitable after the Tour Championship was delayed this week in Llandudno, following a recommendation from local government to the British public to avoid mass events, including venues such as theaters, cinemas, pubs and clubs. The Premier League has been postponed until April 30, the Six Nations Rugby League has also been canceled, and the men’s and women’s tennis seasons will not be renewed until at least June 7.

“These are difficult times for all of us but we are determined to overcome them. Fans around the world together with 144 players want to know if and when the World Cup will be held. Snooker players do not have employers, they need opportunities to earn prize money, so we are responsible for them. We are currently considering different options for holding indoor tournaments and more details will be given next week”said Tura President Barry Hearne, quoted by BGNES.

World Snooker is played in front of crowded stands of the theater in Sheffield and attracts huge masses of viewers.
